Our Sustainability Philosophy
At Kala Surf, sustainability isn’t something we just talk about, it's a way of life we practice, learn, and share with our team every day. Over the years, we’ve seen how small choices add up, so we do our best to make the right ones and care for the oceans and natural spaces around us.
We regularly join beach cleanups, have completely eliminated single-use plastics across the camp, and hold workshops to learn about composting, leading to our own full compost system and hydroponic garden here at camp.

Sustainable Practices in Action
Across Kala, we’ve designed simple systems that make sustainable living easy for both our team and our guests. You’ll find refillable water stations, refillable bathroom amenities in every room, and biodegradable cups and containers for all food and drinks. Our partnership with Urban Compost turns kitchen scraps into nutrient-rich soil for local gardens, closing the loop on waste in a tangible way.
Behind the scenes, we’ve made thoughtful design choices like energy-efficient LED lighting and a rainwater collection system to help conserve power and water. Fresh herbs from our hydroponic garden go straight to the kitchen, and the koi pond brings calm balance to the heart of the camp.
We’re still learning, but proud of the steps we’ve taken in creating a space that feels good to live in, for us, our guests, and the island we call home.
Our Commitment to the Local Community
Kala Surf is deeply connected to the local community, and we do our best to support and collaborate with the people who make this place what it is. From surfers and artists to local makers and repair experts, we believe in growing together and keeping opportunities close to home.
We sponsor young Indonesian surfers and support their training, helping them build confidence and chase their goals. We also back local surf competitions and often help cover travel, accommodation, and entry costs, creating more chances for Indonesian surfers to compete and showcase their talent.

Empowering Local Craftsmanship & Youth
We work closely with Eko (80), a local shaper and the craftsman behind Studio Repair. His work keeps surfboards in use and out of landfills, repairing instead of replacing and teaches younger surfers the value of sustainable craftsmanship. It’s the kind of local knowledge we’re proud to support and share.
Our surf skate park is open every day and free for locals, giving kids and young surfers a safe space to practise, hang out, and grow their confidence on and off the board.
Whether it’s collaborating with local talent, backing young surfers, or creating spaces that bring people together, community isn’t something we do on the side, it’s what Kala is built on.
