Ahhh... the understated warung. In modern Bali, with its ever-increasing number of fancy restaurants and western-style cafes, it's easy to overlook this humble eatery.

When it comes to Kala Surf though, we're always recommending our guests eat at the local warungs. We have our favourites, of course, but you'd be hard pressed to find a bad one in all honesty.

That said, the following warungs in Uluwatu are our favourites! This is the easiest way to stay on your budget while you are in town.

We’ve done the best restaurants in Uluwatu. Now it’s time to talk about where the real food magic happens.

What is a Warung?

Warungs are small family-owned and operated restaurants found throughout Indonesia.

They often serve a variety of traditional dishes, such as nasi goreng (fried rice), mie goreng (fried noodles) and ayam bakar (grilled chicken).

Warungs typically have a cozy, casual atmosphere and offer affordable prices.

How did we choose these Warungs?

While Kala Surf has only been open for a couple of years, our staff and team members have been either living in, coming to or surfing in the Bukit Peninsula for decades.

We've had plenty of time to try out different warungs and narrow down our top picks based on quality, taste and overall experience.

We can't wait to share our favourites with you!

Which type of crowd eats at Warungs?

Warungs have always attracted a wide variety of people, from locals to tourists.

They're generally popular among surfers and backpackers due to their affordable prices and authentic Indonesian dishes.

But don't be surprised if you also see families and expats dining at warungs… they're loved by everyone.

In recent years, some warungs have also become great places for coworking. This just goes to show how versatile and inviting these small eateries can be.

Top Warungs in Uluwatu

1. Yeye's Warung / The Oldest - Most Traditional Warung in Uluwatu

Yeye's Warung is arguably the best and most historical warung in Uluwatu, having been around for over 25 years.

It's become a staple among the surfing community and is known for its laid-back vibe and delicious food. The beers are cheap, there's an interesting fusion of Indonesian and Western dishes and they even have a gift shop where you can find unique souvenirs.

A decent-sized meal will only cost you around IDR 75,000 (approximately just over US$5), making it an affordable option for any budget traveler.

Having lived in Uluwatu, we can tell you from experience that we used to eat here almost twice a day when we first moved here.

2. Satu Uluwatu / The Best All Around Warung in Uluwatu

Are you a vegetarian or vegan who's also looking for a comfortable coworking space? Satu has you covered with comfortable seating, fast WiFi, and a peaceful environment.

Their Asian salads, spinach hummus and cauliflower salad are just a few of the amazing choices you'll have to choose from. From breakfast all the way up to dinner, you can't go wrong at Satu.

There are also fish, chicken and meat dishes if you feel so inclined. The tofu scramble salad, however, is a must!

Insider Tip: This is a coworking spot favorite. It has tons of space, fast wifi, well ventilated, and most important, good coffee!

3. Warung Boga Sari / Traditonal Warung in Uluwatu

This family-run spot serves authentic Balinese and Indonesian cuisine at prices that'll make you wonder if they missed a zero.

The star of the show? Their nasi campur, which locals and travelers alike rave about as some of the best on the Bukit. You can customise your own plate, choosing from a great selection of dishes including gado gado, cap cay (vegetable soup with chicken), satay, and fried chicken that's legitimately addictive.

They've also got smoothie bowls (the MangoNana is a cult favorite), fresh juices, and surprisingly good coffee, making it perfect for breakfast, lunch, or dinner. The covered terrace in the back offers a peaceful escape from the traffic, and the WiFi works well enough for a proper work session.

Expect to pay around IDR 25,000-50,000 (roughly $2-3) for a filling meal. The staff are incredibly friendly and welcoming, and the whole vibe feels like eating at a friend's house rather than a restaurant. It's the real deal, authentic, affordable, and absolutely delicious.

4. Warung Local / A Westernised Warung in Uluwatu

Warung Local is not a traditional warung, it offers a unique twist on local cuisine with a trendy and modern atm´osphere. There's an extensive range of dishes and as per usual, there's a good range of different drinks to complement your meal.

This warung offers a more westernized menu of Nasi Campur. You can eat here for only IDR 60,000 (around US$4), which makes it worth a visit for those looking to try something familiar while still enjoying the flavours of Bali.

They also have really good ice cream, free rice crackers, and a nice little air-conditioned coworking space if you want to spend the day there!

Insider Tip: This place can get extremely busy during lunch-time but don't worry Warung Satu is right down the road if you are really hungry and don't want to wait.

5. Babi Guling Bali Ayu / The Best Babi Guling in Uluwatu

If you're in Uluwatu and haven't tried babi guling yet, Babi Guling Bali Ayu is where you need to go. This no-frills spot serves up one of the most authentic and delicious versions of Bali's famous roasted suckling pig.

This place is impossible to miss because it has a giant red sign out front that says, "STOP!!! FOR BABI"

For just IDR 20,000-35,000 (about $1.50-2.50), you get a generous portion of tender, flavorful pork with crispy skin, served with rice, spicy sambal, and rich bone broth soup. The meat is incredibly well-seasoned, the spices are on point, and everything is cooked fresh throughout the day.

Pro tip: Get there before 2-3 PM because they're starting to sell out fast, word's gotten out about how good this place is. The atmosphere is no-frills local Balinese, don't expect fancy tables or air conditioning, but the food more than makes up for the bare-bones setup. If you are very hungry or a big guy, get two plates of Babi, but beware it may put you in a food coma.

The woman who runs the place is friendly and helpful, especially if it's your first time trying babi guling. The portions are generous for the price, the flavors are authentic and strong (this is proper Balinese spicy), and you'll leave with a very full belly for less than the cost of a coffee at most western cafes.

This is the kind of place locals recommend to each other, and now you know about it too.

The layout is open and airy and the food menu is sublime. We're talking chicken satay, crispy tempeh and babi guling... and that's just the start. Their most ordered dish is the nasi goreng with its perfectly cooked rice. It’s one of our favourites, for sure!

Sit inside and enjoy the shade or kick back in the garden with its many tables and bungalows. It's so welcoming you'll never want to leave!

This place is very well located in the center of town by Drifter, hard to miss.
